The commune of Monteriggioni has its chief town
in proximity of the homonym fortitude of the XIII century. It is
found in the province in Siena, to an altitude of 356 meters s.l.m.
and it has a population of around 7000 inhabitants.
Although the principal housing nucleus is already well consolidated around the year Thousand, the castle you/he/she has been built only beginning from 1213, for wish of the Republic Senese, in correspondence of an ancient farm longobarda. I sweep principal of its building is to garrison the street that conducts in Florence creating a sort of defensive outpost in Siena.
It represents one of the first castles built by the senesis, which
have always preferred to already purchase existing fortresses from
feudal noble in decadence.
In the XIV century the suburb firmly remains still in the hands of the Senesis despite the scourge of the plague and an attempt to occupy him/it, perpetrated by a group of exiled senesi in 1383 and failure for the not intervention in Florence. Nevertheless, the development of the shot dust and the consequent birth of the artillery, reduce notably the imbattibilità of the castle. You lower the boundaries and you eliminate the carbonaies, Monteriggioni modernizes his/her structures and succeeds in going out unharmed from the 1554 siege operated by the pontifical army historical ally of Florence.
Little time later however, captain Zeti's betrayal, that the city
delivers to the Florentines without fighting, makes to capitulate
the castle and flattens the road to the definitive conquest of the
senese from the troops medicee. |
